Organised by Greater Manchester Association of Trades Union Councils (GMATUC) in conjunction with Greater Manchester Keep Our NHS Public

* Up to five local A&E units across Greater Manchester are under threat of closure/downgrading under the proposed “Healthier Together Review” of how local NHS services are provided and/or as a result of other cutbacks/alleged efficiency savings/improvements to services. These include Bolton’s, Wigan’s, Tameside’s, and North Manchester’s as well as Trafford General’s which was the hospital from which Nye Bevan announced the birth of the NHS back in 1948.

* Two former A&E units in Bury & Rochdale have already been downgraded in recent months.

* The potential results of the Healthier Together Review are that the Greater Manchester area, which has a population of 2.7 million people, will be left with only 5 A&E units in Oldham, Stockport, Salford, and Central & South Manchester.

* GMATUC believes Greater Manchester needs to retain its present range of NHS facilities, including its A&E Units. The closure of any such units not only increases the chance of potential fatalities due to the additional travelling time of ambulances, but the existence of the remaining NHS facilities at the hospital concerned. In so doing, that also adds to the long term pressures on all NHS facilities at hospitals nearby. A&E Units closures would also clearly add immediate pressure to those remaining. We do not believe ANY should close.

Speakers include: Dr. John Lister (Health Emergency Campaign)
Dr. David Wrigley (NW GP - Keep Our NHS Public)

Local campaigners invited from Save Trafford General, 38 Degrees, Save Bolton & Wigan A&E campaigns, Greater Manchester Keep Our NHS Public, NHS Support Federation, Socialist Health Association, Campaign Against Manchester Ambulance Privatisation, NHS User Groups, Greater Manchester’s Local Health Scrutiny Committees, Local MPs & Councillors, Health Sevice Unions

Workshops on:

* How to set up a local NHS campaign group in your area to respond to the GM Healthier Together Review and to stop the the threatened A&E closures/downgrading, and other NHS service cutbacks, best practice, etc

* CCG Constitutions & CCG related campaigning work

* How local Councillors and MPs can help to resist cutbacks and privatisation of the NHS

* How to protect our ‘Out of Hours’, Ambulance, & Other NHS Services

* How can we best fight cuts in NHS budgets & creeping privatisation regionally and nationally - How could we organise and fund the NHS - What is our response to the argument that current spending on the NHS is “unsustainable”?

* How can we best support each other across GM?

Plenary discussion on a proposed GM Day/Week of Action and date of a ‘GM co-ordinating cttee’ meet up to work on final detail of latter, and sort out anything else which might need sorting.

Everyone concerned and who has the faith to fight for the NHS is welcome.
