Sign the petition: Campaign to save HMRC offices in Sunderland
HMRC offices threatened with closure in Sunderland are Shackleton House, Gilbridge House in Sunderland City Centre and Weardale House is in Washington.
Campaigners are working to fight the closures. Job losses will be high and the effect of job losses on the local economy is likely to be severe.
Gilbridge has about 300 staff with an enquiry centre and deals with VAT, NI, tax compliance and personal tax.
Shackleton has already been reduced to about 100 staff with some processing and Debt Management.
Weardale House is in Washington and they are primarily compliance with some VAT staff. About 200 staff are in there.
The PCS recently carried out a spending survey in the two Sunderland offices. From 26/1-17/2, over 22k was spent by the staff in the local shops, cafes etc.
