BPACC - Dorset Living Wage Campaign
BPACC supporters joined Dorset Trade Unions (Unite, Unison, GMB, Wey & Dorchester TUC, Bmth & Poole TUC) in their lobby for Dorset County Council (14-11-2013) in support of a Labour Group motion to pay the Living Wage to workers in Dorset. At least 66,000 workers in Dorset currently get an hourly rate below the level of the Living Wage – that’s around 1 in 4 in the county. There are as many as 83,700 workers in the Dorset workforce out of a total of 279,000* (2012 figures) who are working in low pay sectors. Not all earn below the Living Wage but very many do. The lowest 10% of wage earners in Dorset, that’s 27,900* working people earn less than £6.50* at hour.
Some 16% of Dorset employers provide 75% of the local employment, the remaining 84% of business provide 25% of the jobs. Many of those 16% of employers are multi-nationals or public sector employers who dominate the local economy or their sectors.
