Manchester for the Alternative TUC march photographs and report

I was covering the demonstration in Manchester yesterday by various groups under the TUC banner of ‘Manchester for the Alternative”. It was organised to conicide with the Conservative Party Conference that began in the city.
Reports of about 30K demonstrators gathered and marched in the city centre angry at the current Government cuts and changes to pensions.
Occupy Manchester, a group inspired by occupations in New York, Athens and Madrid, planned to use Albert Square as a general assembly point for workshops for the week. I followed this group and half way along the march route they broke through the police lines and forced their way into Albert Square. Numbers were quite small, maybe 500 at the most and settled in the square completely peacefully. Food was passed around, games and more serious discussions about the cuts and current Government began.
I stayed until 4pm and left as numbers began to dwindle - I think the rain helped there a little. However, the camp remained overnight and the police seemed happy with the calm and peaceful nature of the protest.
I’ve uploaded an Occupy Manchester set to my Flickr.
