Liverpool photographer at Merseyside United against the Cuts March and Rally

Saturday 11th December 2010 saw many local trade union activists and ordinary working class people assemble outside the Metropolitan Cathedral Hope Street for a march to Liverpool Town Hall and a rally.
I was there covering the event as a Liverpool based freelance photographer and was amazed to see the number of police resources that had be assigned to this totally peaceful event. I guess coming days after student demonstrations in London that wasn’t to be surprised.
Student leaders spoke at the assembly point and were very well supported and invited to lead the march to the city’s Town Hall. The rally received fantastic support from shoppers and passers-by in town and it was evident quite a few people joined in half way along the route.
After the rally and speakers a small group of students and young people headed into to the city centre to protest outside Vodaphone and Top Shop as part of the UK-Uncut protests against tax dodging big businesses.
Speakers at the rally included: Len McCluskey (Unite), Alex Gordon (RMT), Chris Baugh (PCS), Alec McFadden (Merseyside TUC), Peter Bunting (ICTU), Julie Lyon-Taylor (NUT), Doreen McNally (Women against the Cuts), Roger Bannister (Unison)
Supported by Merseyside TUC, NUT, UCU, FBU, Sefton, Wirral and Women against the Cuts campaign groups
