Southend Marches Against the Cuts
Well done to everyone who turned out to make Southend Against The Cuts’ march and rally a huge success! 200 of us marched though the High Street on a freezing Sunday to get the message across.
We had banners and flags from many groups including PCS (civil servants), Unison, National Union of Teachers, Universities and College Union, TSSA, Southend Labour Party and Keep Our NHS Public. Thanks also to Cambridgeshire Unison, Harlow Trades Council and Chelmsford Against The Cuts who all made the trek South to support our protest!
There was a real sense of solidarity, anger and determination from marchers and speakers. Everyone also agreed that this was just the start of a campaign that can turn back the tide of cuts and attacks on working people. There was a great reception for Dan Swain from Essex University and many others pointed out how the students had shown that a fight back is possible!
Thanks to everybody who came, and to the stewards organisers and speakers - now we look forward to taking the anti-cuts message to more people in the town and the region and to building a national movement that can win!
There are photos on Facebook and we will post more up as they come in, see here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?o.153616524655932
There was some coverage of the march on BBC Look east here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-11983756
Keep up the fight!
