Cuts
Somerset bus services TA
Somerset County Council is cutting its bus subsidies across the county. This could mean 50 percent of bus services ceasing. Those most likely to go will be unprofitable rural services. Somerset is a largely rural county and many people depend on the bus service to be able to get to the shops, particularly since many rural post offices have been forced to close.
Update August 2014:
In 2011 SCC produced a map showing the bus routes likely to close due to withdrawal of funding. Removal of these services would isolate over 60 communities across the County from the public transport network, in addition to those in the more rural areas (mainly West Somerset) which previously lacked public transport. No further updates to this map have been produced.
Locally developed Community Transport schemes have reduced the impact to some extend, but they are patchily distributed and generally have a lesser
scope than the services they replace.
