Asylum Seekers Unit (Your Homes Newcastle) NE7
The Home Office has decided not to award Your Homes Newcastle’s Asylum Seekers Unit (ASU) an extension on their contract despite the award-winning service that they have provided to asylum seekers and local communities in Newcastle since December 1999. The Asylum Seeker Unit was one part of the North East Contracting Consortium for Asylum Support (NECCAS) that has developed a comprehensive support network which not only acknowledged the wider social issues involved in providing asylum seeker support, but was highly regarded in the region amongst the voluntary sector and their clients. Despite all of the evidence in favour of the NECCAS bid, the private sector bid won out. As a consequence, the expertise and professionalism developed by organisations like the ASU over years will be lost. The community cohesion implications of this are enormous. It is the opinion of the Citywide group, composed of workers from the sector, that there will be a far greater price to be paid by the local authority in terms of homelessness, ghettoisation and community tension as a consequence of this cut.
