Dorset property repair and maintenance
Dorset County Council’s property management division supports the delivery of the council’s capital programme, manages and delivers the repair and maintenance programme, and provides advice on property assets to the whole authority. The council is currently working to reduce its property portfolio in order to address its £41m maintenance backlog and £2m annual shortfall in repairs and maintenance funding. If the capital programme is reduced as anticipated, this ought to lead to reduced workloads for the property management division in time. Savings proposals therefore include:
• reducing the number of staff, at both management and maintenance levels (to be managed predominantly through existing vacancies/future planned retirements)
• losing expertise for rating, to use external consultants when required (mainly needed on a 5 yearly cycle)
• reducing the capacity to respond as quickly to corporate property priorities;
• increasing the potential for earned income, including income from county farms
