CAMPAIGNERS were left “devastated” after the cabinet voted to close Friern Barnet at 4pm today (5 April 2012)
The library, in Friern Barnet Road, had been granted a small stay of execution in February after councillors opposed plans to close and merge it with North Finchley library at a new landmark arts library at artsdepot. But last night all hopes were dashed when cabinet members rejected the request to keep the library open until the new service is ready at the arts centre in Tally Ho Corner.
At the Hendon Town Hall meeting last night Robert Rams, cabinet member for customer access, reiterated his view that the library should close. Before the meeting he told The Press: “We need to market it as soon as possible so we can get the funds to open it at the artsdepot. Financially we can’t keep it open as we will be jeopardising the other improvements we want to make.”
After a multitude of public questions, cabinet members rejected the request of the business overview and scrutiny committee and confirmed that the library would be closed by 4pm today.
