Isle of Wight libraries PO30
Sector: Libraries
Isle of Wight Council plans to shut nine of its 11 libraries. Cowes, Sandown, Ventnor and Freshwater libraries would remain open until 31 March 2012 in the hope that community-run libraries will be set up instead. East Cowes, Bembridge, Shanklin, Niton and Brighstone libraries are due to close on 31 March 2011.
The plans include enhancement of the two surviving libraries, at Newport and Ryde, which will open for 50 hours a week. The council stresses that volunteers can be found to run the libraries it plans shut. The music library, which enables the local orchestra to procure scores, is to be closed.
