Cuts
Peterborough charities rate relief PE1
Peterborough City Council is planning to cut the funding it provides charities for relief from business rates.
At present, central government funds 80 percent relief from business rates for registered charities. This is mandatory and is not under threat.
However, in Peterborough, charities can also apply for relief on the remaining 20 percent of business rates. Successful applicants receive relief on all or part of this 20 percent, with three-quarters of the relief provided by Peterborough City Council, and the remaining quarter provided by central government.
The council is now reviewing this policy with the intention of cutting 25 percent of its budget for rate relief for charities. More charities will face higher bills for business rate relief as a result.
