They’re cutting talking therapies at my GP surgery

Our senior GP reported to our patient panel last week that owing to savings required of the PCT a counselling service provided at the practice by trained psychologists will have to be cut entirely. In the meantime, in the absence of PCT funding, the service is being supported by charitable donations from local community organisations, but this is not a practical long term solution.
The GP said this has been an excellent service, greatly appreciated by the clinical staff and patients alike and very good value for money. His fear is that many patients with low level mental health problems will now experience a deterioration in their mental health and will require medication and/or other costly interventions which would not be necessary if this service could be maintained.
