Scrapping young people’s services is a tragedy

The entire network of Youth Clubs and Connexions Services to the young people of Suffolk are being ended. They propose to replace an entire network of professionally run services with a volunteer based ‘organisation’. This will lead to thousands of the most vulnerable young people being unable to access vital support at a time in their lives when they most need it.

My partner has worked with Connexions, coordinating Positive Activities for Young People (PAYP) across the county. Her job has all but disappeared despite it having achieved fantastic results (according to Ofsted!) with young people who would otherwise be at risk of offending behaviour.

What are they being offered instead? Uncoordinated, volunteer run clubs and groups, often linked to religious bodies with their own, narrow agendas and little, if any understanding of the backgrounds and needs of the young people with whom they’ll be working.

It’s a tragedy.
